September,October

Summer in Southern  Africa is now    approaching   fast and now various animal sicknesses become more prevalent with the warmer weather. Do for instance take steps against ticks, which can be very dangerous at worst and also cause abcesses or other irritations to both dogs and cats.

I have found that the best method to cut down on ticks and fleas ,its a good idea to use a shampoo specially made for dogs that contain dips that help control ticks. Some cat owners are lucky enough to be able to wash their cats and can use a similar method. If not then rub pet powders specially formulated for cats and difficult dogs into the hair and try to get it as close to the skin as possible.Do examine your pet at regular intervals and if possible remove ticks that have not yet firmly held  to the animals.I use a steel comb with extremely fine teeth for more hairy animals.
I have never liked dips that are dropped onto the dogs backs which  are supposed to give residual protection up to seven days or longer. My family were farmers in the past and then experiments were carried out  by experimental institutes that came up with the startling  results that all those dips did was breed resistant ticks over a period of time and then to control that menance you would have to use even stronger dips. For our cattle in those dayss it was recommended that we use ECTAFOS(WHICH IS NOT ON THE MARKET ANY MORE) AS IT KILLED TICKS ON CONTACT AND THEN FOR ANOTHER FOUR HOURS THERE AFTER NOT AT ALL.
To fully under stand how the risidual dips work .The first ticks that come in contact with it are killed, how ever as it becomes weaker some of the last ticks to climb onto the animal  survice and then breed with a resistence to that particular dip and then their offspring are a worse menance than now over time.

Mixed Breeds

I guess its how this comes about that matters!
These mixed breeds in my opinion mostly produce healthier dogs than thorough breds as the gene pool of the latter are some times too narrow and  a certain amount of in-breeding occurs. All in  the name of keeping the various breeds "pure of course" really for the vanity and satisfaction of humans.
In-breeding also known as line-breeding can on occasion increase  the trait desired and embed it in the animal so that that trait becomes more pronounced if the animal is used for further breeding and will also be present in the offspring. How ever on the other hand it also acentuates weaknesses and such animals are not as robust as those of mixed breed.
===================================
Besides some breeders purposely breeding cross breeding dogs ,on most occasions crosses occur by accident ,as owners don't keep proper control of their pets or have bitches spayed timeously or feel its cruel to do so.
One of my neighbours used to put his bitch in the garage every evening when she came on heat.He treated her very well I must add with enough clean water and letting her out during the night for toilet etc. There was a dog next door that watched this palava to keep her from becoming pregnant. He fancied her ,but was never allowed to get near. One morning when they opened the garage door out came strolling this mutt with her.He had hidden himself in the Garage the next time she came on heat!
Fancy scientists tell us dogs do everything by reptition and not by a thinking process like us.Aboulutely untrue I say!

GROW OLD WITH DOGS

GROW OLD WITH DOGS
by
BERNIE DRYER

When I am old...
I shall wear soft grey sweatshirts...
and a bandana over my hair...
and I shall spend my social security cheques
on wine and my dogs.
I shall sit in my house on my well -worn chair and
listen to my dogs breathing.
I shall sneak out in the middle of the warm summer night
and take my dogs for a run,
if my old bones will allow...

When people come to call,
I shall smile and nod as I show them my dogs...
and talk to them about them...
...and the ones so beloved of the past...
and the ones beloved today...
I shall still work hard cleaning after them, mopping
and feeding them and whispering their names
in a loving way.
I shall wear gleaming sweat upon my throat ,like a
jewel and I shall be an embarrassment to all...
especially my family...
who have not yet found peace...
in being free to have dogs as your best friends

These friends that always wait,
at any hour for your footfall...
and eagerly jump to their feet out of a sound sleep,
to greet you ,as if you are  God,with warm eyes and adoring love and hope,
that will always stay,
I'll hug their big strong necks...
I'll kiss their dear sweet heads...
and whisper in their very special company...
loving dogs is easy ,please accept for who I am...
when you are old you will understand too,
they love my presence in their lives,
if you have dogs you love you too,

A Mans Best Friend

Yes a mans best friend has been said to be his dog. This can be extended to cats as well, especially if they are treated with kindness and well looked after.
Here are some hints to make your home a place of safety and joy to yourself and your pets.
In many situations your dog is a guard dog as well and will sleep in his own kennel, but it is in many situations impossible to let your pet sleep outside, then modifications can be made to your home environment.
To protect furniture and keep it unstained especially from a new pet,try a washable slip over for your lounge chairs or for the chair favoured by your pet. A better option is to buy a      pet bed and keep it in your living room and train your pet  to stay off your furniture permanently. Nothing puts your human friends  or important visitors off more to be told just as are about to seat themselves "No that's my pets chair !".
To prevent that ruined look about a house and to keep it looking elegant,do avoid verticle blinds, ornate tassels, and long cords. If a pet is caught in any of these coverings it could panic and ruin them by thashing about. It could harm themselves by getting strangled as well as bringing them crashing down.
Try to keep electrical cords concealed ,such as under carpets or with a metal pipe covering if in a semi-permanent position ,to avoid electricution of especially young pets as they might take to chewing these.
Never allow your pet to chew on small plastic toys as this can lead to their death in an instant unobserved by any one and finally be aware where your pets are when you arrive or leave your premises by car as death can occur in an instant.Naomi works as a temp worker for a vet at times and you would be surprised how often this happens to the distress of all when the pet has to be put down. You can teach a pet to scoot by hooting or better still pick the pet up when you open your gate and let it ride with you the last few yards with you.
It is also better to use washable paints on your walls ,in areas frequented by animals.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today I am going to write about our friends in our street that also have pets.
Whenever we go away on business or holidays we look after each others pets. Yes there is a kennel just out of town that has been going for many years as well, and treats animals humanely ,but our pets are so cosseted that they always seem to suffer from truama symtoms when taken away from their homes. We are four families and we become familiar with each others pets, feeding ,exercising and fondling them before any one goes away.We also look after each others houses,so the arrangement works well.I should say that we are all very loving owners.Next month I shall descibe some of the  pets ,including my own- Barry

OUR PETS ARE HEALERS AND ROLE MODELS

Someday you might hear doctors say"Pet two animals and call me in the morning"

Our pets share our lives and enrich us in many ways--and theres a lot of evidence they are good for our health.
One medical study found that people that have a pet to come home to who have a heart attack, live longer after hospilisation.
Other studies have shown that peoples blood pressure and stress levels drop whenever they pet a friendly animal.Even looking at an animal, such as a fish in a tank, results in a consistent drop in blood pressure.
Each pet and each human-pet interaction is UNIQUE ,but all pets are loyal and loving:patiently understanding and forgiving;appreciative and responsive; also playful and creative and most of all ,they love us for who we are.

When I was about ten year old and was living in Johannesburg(South Africa) in 1948 with my parents after we had bought our first house.I found a stray cat on the yard and as it was mewing pitifully ,stole into the house to give it a saucer of milk.It drank it an dissapeared which I was thankful for as I was certain my parents would not approve of it.  I re-appeared everyday and therefore I started taking food and milk out to it with out been seen,or so I hoped. My mother confronted me  one day and I then weepily told her all.I lead her to the cat and she being an animal lover herself ,could never resist animals herself allowed me to keep it .It made itself at home, she found out it was a grey striped tabby tom-cat and said we  needed a name for it. We named it after the comic charater Tom Mix . He often brought mice and rats home to show he was doing his work. He had an independent streak in him and would dissappear for days at a time,in which at first we mourned his loss till we became used to his routine.A couple of years later we found out he had at least three "homes" on the neighbourhood ,at least thats all we knew about! He was very loving  and purred so beautifully had very good manners ,like never jumping up on a table and never eating food that he was not called for.Obviously a cat with an attitude and a "territory !" So when we sold and moved again we did not worry too much  what would become of him although we did miss him

We Adore Our Paw Partners

I was given my first puppy when  I was six years  of age,a Fox Terrier. My family moved many times in those years and I suppose we were not allowed to own pets at our next address.I noticed the day he disappeared my mother who did all the looking after was weepy all day.I was told he went to stay with his doggy friends,an explanation that seemed quite logical to me then, although I missed him terribly at first.
My mother read a "letter" a week later from my dog that told us all about his new life and thanked us all by name for caring for him. That consoled me and in time forgot about him with so many other things  to interest me as I was starting school as well about then.
